Welcome to our blooming world!
We’re a small flower farm based out of Blue Marble Acres in Novato. We focus on regenerative agriculture, with little to no tillage, absolutely no pest control spraying (not even organic pest control,) and no chemical fertilizers. We rely on our beneficial insects and bird friends as our pest control. We use organic compost and mulch to keep our beds healthy and hydrated. We have pasture raised hens, and two endangered Cotton Patch geese to help us with weeding.
The commercial flower industry is quite toxic for you and the planet. Most of the flowers sold in United States come from Latin America. The United States has a very strict policy on agriculture coming into the country, understandably, as we don’t want diseases and pests from other countries entering the United States. That means every shipment is carefully inspected before entering, and if any form of disease or pest is found on even just one plant, the entire shipment is fumigated and destroyed at the airport. That means lost money for the grower and seller. This leads to the use of copious amounts of pesticides and herbicides on their flowers while growing, and again, before being shipped, to prevent this from happening. You can find videos and photos online of the amount of PPE their employees wear when spraying the plants.
That means when you find a cheap bouquet of flowers at your local market, you’re inviting everything they sprayed on them into your home. Not to mention the amount of plastic that is used to bunch the flowers, the fuel it takes to ship them here, and the low wages they pay their workers. We’re trying to change that. Though we can’t compete with the prices, we can commit to better growing and selling practices with our customers, and mother earths health in mind.
